An acclaimed ice cream brand with roots in Central Massachusetts has continued its expansion in the Boston area. New City Microcreamery opened its newest store at 19 Commonwealth Ave. in Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, replacing the former White Mountain Creamery. The family-run ice cream joint closed in November 2025 after 45 years. At the time, White Mountain Creamery revealed that New City Microcreamery would be taking over the space.
“One of our top priorities prior to departing was to make sure the tradition established by the White Mountain Creamery will continue,” owner Peter Coufos wrote in an online statement. “It took the better part of the past year vetting a number of candidates and we believe we found the perfect one in New City Microcreamery! Thus our departure will allow for an exciting new beginning.”
The opening marks New City Microcreamery’s fifth scoop shop overall. It joins existing locations in Hudson, Sudbury, Cambridge and Arlington. The company also operates a factory in Bolton. Located just steps away from Boston College, the Chestnut Hill shop will continue to serve as a go-to ice cream spot for college students.
“Being right next to Boston College makes this location extra special,” New City Microcreamery founder Michael Kasseris said in a statement. “We are looking forward to seeing students, families, and neighbors stop by for a scoop after class or while spending time around campus.”
Founded in 2015, New City Microcreamery is an award-winning small batch ice cream company known for its scratch-made ice cream and creative flavors.
The ice cream — made extra smooth from the company’s liquid nitrogen freezing method — quickly gained a local following. Signature flavors include Salted Cookies & Cream, Baklava and Mint Chocolate Chip.
New City Microcreamery was crowned the best ice cream in Massachusetts in a 2018 MassLive poll. The company has also been recognized by outlets such as Boston Magazine, Eater and Thrillist as one of the best ice cream destinations in New England.
