The longtime ice cream destination familiar to Boston College students has a new scoop shop behind the counter. New City Microcreamery has opened in Chestnut Hill, taking over the former White Mountain Creamery space at 19 Commonwealth Ave., a location that had long been a go-to dessert stop for Boston College students and residents alike.
The Massachusetts-based ice cream company marked the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week.
White Mountain Creamery closed late last year under its previous ownership after serving the neighborhood for decades. In its place, New City is bringing its small-batch ice cream, late-night hours, and rotating menu of classic and creative flavors.
The Chestnut Hill shop is New City’s latest expansion. The company also has scoop shops in Hudson, Sudbury, Cambridge, Arlington, and Bolton.
New City is known for using liquid nitrogen to freeze its ice cream. The company says the process helps create smaller ice crystals, giving the ice cream a smoother texture.
Its menu includes familiar flavors like vanilla, chocolate, mint chip, cookie dough, and cookies and cream, as well as options like baklava, tiramisu, blueberry cheesecake, Boston cream pie, and PB Banana Fluff.
The new Chestnut Hill location also has one flavor of its own: Cookie Monster, made with sweet cream ice cream, cookie dough, Oreo pieces, and brownie bites.
The shop is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to midnight and Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight.
