KIDS WHO WEAR HELMETS WHILE RIDING THEIR BIKES IN SUDBURY ARE IN FOR A COOL BENEFIT

By Norman Miller

If you wear a helmet while bicycling in Sudbury, you could be in for some tasty benefits.

The Sudbury Police Department has partnered with New City Microcreamery, which has stores in Cambridge, Hudson and Sudbury, to give good bicycling citations to children exhibiting bicycle safety.

Citations can be traded in at New City for a scoop of ice cream.

"We really want to promote good behavior and increase bicycle safety," police spokesman Lt. John Perodeau said.

The idea spawned from school resource officers, who contacted New City Microcreamery. The ice cream shop was more than happy to partner with police, marketing manager Taso Vitsas said.

"We always want to emphasize the importance of safety," he said. "We are a company that relies heavily on training and safety. This (the citations) is creating good behavior. Anything we can do to help the community, we will do."
