An award-winning ice cream brand with roots in Central Massachusetts is expanding in the Boston area.
New City Microcreamery‘s Arlington scoop shop should open by the end of August, the business confirmed to MassLive Tuesday. A poster in the window of the storefront, located in Arlington Center where Abbott’s Frozen Custard used to be, says the shop is “coming soon.”
This will be New City’s fourth location — joining scoop shops in Hudson, Sudbury and Cambridge. The Arlington shop will offer a rotating selection of more than 30 small-batch flavors, including dairy and plant-based options, signature sundaes and milkshakes.
“Jason [co-founder of New City Microcreamery] and I grew up in a neighborhood not far from Arlington Center (Belmont), and we frequented this beautiful downtown for dining and shopping. So it feels like we are coming full circle, now being able to offer our ice cream where we once enjoyed a scoop and a stroll as kids,” Michael Kasseris, co-founder of New City Microcreamery, said in a press release. “We can’t wait to share our passion with the community — from our Baklava ice cream to our Best of Boston–winning Dubai Chocolate.”
Kasseris opened the first New City scoop shop in Hudson in 2015 with Jason Kleinerman and Karim El-Gamal.
The ice cream — made extra smooth from the company’s liquid nitrogen freezing method — quickly gained a local following. The popular ice cream comes in many flavors, including Salted Cookies & Cream, Baklava and Mint Chocolate Chip.
New City would eventually be crowned the best ice cream in Massachusetts in a 2018 MassLive poll. The company has also been recognized by outlets such as Boston Magazine, Eater and Thrillist as one of the best ice cream destinations in New England.
In 2021, New City started selling packaged ice cream in Whole Foods stores. The company also opened a factory in 2023 in Shirley to ramp up production.
However, New City’s expansion hasn’t stopped its founders from staying true to their roots.
“We’re one of maybe a handful of ice cream companies in the whole country that’s actually doing this. No one makes ice cream from scratch,” Kasseris told MassLive in 2023. “One hundred years ago, there were thousands of ice cream manufacturers that were actually taking milk and cream and sugar and making it, the whole process. ... This is the only way to make ice cream. If you want to make real ice cream, we have to start with milk and cream and sugar and real strawberries, real mint and real, whole chocolate.”
The address for the soon-to-open Arlington New City Microcreamery is 311 Broadway.
